In the spring of 1886, a group of people from Kulm, Bessarabia, who had first squatted on lands in teh Kulm Township in Hutchinson County, south east South Dakota (Dakota Territory), settles in the area south of the present-day Kulm North Dakota. Kulm, Bessarabia, founded in 1815, was in teh Akkerman District and was Evangelical Lutheran.
