The Germans from Russia Heritage Collection is pleased to announce the availability of the family history, The Johannes Baumgartner Story and Genealogy, written by the late John J. Baumgartner, Jr., a longtime music teacher in Strasburg, Emmons County, North Dakota.

According to the family history, Georg and Josepha Eva Baumgartner left Alsace around the vicinity of Jochgrim and Germerheim, Germany, about the years 1804 - 1808 for South Russia (today near Odessa, Ukraine). They settled in the Catholic village of Straßburg, Kutschurgan Enclave. Johannes Baumgartner came to America with his brothers, Franz and Jacob and his sisters, Rosina, Regina, Eva, Rosalia, and Katherina. A brother, Joseph, decided to stay in Russia and it is unknown what happened to him.

Anton was the father of Johannes Baumgartner. Further details can be found on pages 7 to 52.

When Johannes and his wife, Margaret Braungel and their children, Joseph, Margaretta, Michael, John, Anton, Leopold, Barbara, Eva, and Josephine, came to America, they left a first child, Josephina, buried in South Russia. Elizabeth was born in North Dakota.

Johannes and Margaret Baumgartner arrived in America in 1889, the year of North Dakota statehood. They left from the port of Hamburg, Germany, for New York City. Then by railroad, they traveled to Eureka, South Dakota. By oxcart, they left Eureka for Strasburg, Emmons County, North Dakota.
